Today, I had been to get myself enrolled to UID. Before getting in to specifics on how to get it, for those who don’t know what UID or Aadhaar card is, I will try to explain it briefly. It is an identification card which Govt of India is planning to issue to every resident of India and not necessarily only citizens of India. This mammoth exercise will be first of its kind in the world which covers more than one billion people. This card as it is named is truly unique.
Unlike other cards such as PAN Card, Drivers Licence that are identified by name, photograph, address and so on which can have duplicates, UID will identified by the following details
- Name
- Photo
- Address
- Date of Birth
- Father/Mother/Husband/Wife Name
- Finger Print
- Iris Scan
This card is valid for life and can be used as proof of identity anywhere in India. There is no cost attached to getting enrolled nor receiving the card. Each card will have a uniquely identifiable 12 digit number.
Some other information about Aadhaar:
Aadhaar will be:
Easily verifiable in an online, cost-effective way
Unique and robust enough to eliminate the large number of duplicate and fake identities in government and private databases
A random number generated, devoid of any classification based on caste, creed, religion and geography

How to get it?
Each person who would like to get enrolled would need
- Proof of identity : PAN Card, Passport & Govt ID cards are permissible for Identity
- Proof of Address : Passport, Bank passbook/statement, Voter ID, Ration Card
View the complete list of documents in the official UIDAI website
All documents need to be carried in originals and the same will be scanned and uploaded to their database.Even if you or someone in your family does not have valid documents, you can still enrol. If the head of the household has relevant documents, he/she can first enrol and then introduce others in the family while they are enrolling. If even the head of household has no documents, you may take the help of Introducers available at the enrolment center.Once you have all the necessary documents, you need to identify an authorized enrollment center. I would first visit the nearest Post office as most of the post offices are taking the enrollments. If you are visiting the post office, please make sure you have taken an appointment. In some cities, there will be enrollment drives being carried out. Watch out for those events and make the best use of it as it is much faster and will not have long queuesYou can also visit the complete list of enrollment center across India here.

Please let me know how to get the duplicate UID Card, if I lost the original one.
Posted by mudit agrawal | November 23, 2011, 7:18 amI think you can call the UID toll free number 1800-180-1947 and raise a request for duplicate card.
They might ask for the UID enrollment number and few other verification questions.
If this does not help, my next best guess is to call the various enrollment agencies in your city and ask their guidance. You can get the complete list of enrollment agencies from here – http://uidai.gov.in/images/FrontPageUpdates/updated_list_of_eas_17_nov.pdf
